With the moving of services away from Parallels Desktop on Intel Mac hardware I have inadvertently brought back compatibility with Mac OS on the Macintosh Rescue network. Netatalk 4 seems greatly improved over previous versions with a broader range of compatibility. FreeBSD is my favourite operating system for running Netatalk as I have found that everything works exactly like it is supposed to, which has not been my experience with Netatalk on Linux.
All file sharing or ‘AppleShare’s are reinstated and I have full access to these files from my Apple Silicon Mac’s too. I look forward to some retro web design from Mac OS 9, and uploading securely to my modern web server again hosted on FreeBSD.
One service I sadly cannot reinstate is the NetBoot 9 system which can be hosted on Mac OS X Server 10.5 Leopard and earlier. I do still have a Mac mini G4 so in exceptional circumstances I can boot that up and have NetBoot 9 available.
